Here is another shot from my late morning trip to Smith Rock earlier this month. This is shot from the east end of the state park, over where the cliff seems to be cleaving off (that's why I didn't get lower or closer ;-). I know, I know, I'll go back in earlier or later light, but from above, sometimes high sun seems to help.

7D, ISO 160, f/16, 1/45s (handheld!!)
Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 at 13mm
I think I still had on the ND Grad filter

You have done a beautiful job capturing the depth, terrain and range of colors in this area Marylynne, I like it!

The comp really works, Marylynne. It does need better, less harsh light, but the comp is excellent.

Thanks, everyone. I'm thinking evening for this location in the future, since if faces west. The river bed will be dark though, so I'll bracket and do a light hdr treatment.

I think that's a good idea, Marylynne. You also might try for a late, late afternoon shot with the sun really low, but not putting the river in shadow.

From a composition standpoint this looks good. All the different elements work together to make me feel like I'm standing at this overlook. I agree about the harsh light, but I still like this one.

Thanks, everyone. I'm planning to visit this shooting spot more often. This was the first time I've wandered into this section of the park since sometime in the 80s.
