Backlit Frit
Small Pearl Bordered Fritillary
Accident really. My son was layed down photographing this with the late evening sun behind him and my wife was standing to the left. The butterfly was about to go down for the night and I had no chance but to do it straight into the sun. It then took off and I moaned at Steve and he said "find your own " !!
I don,t know - kids these days ( mind you he is forty.)
I quite like the result though . At least its different !

Very envious John, this is such a smart butterfly, comp works for me and the backlighting really makes the colours of the wings stand out very well, like it lots.

The backlighting really works well here, The comp sits abit uneasy with me, I think either a tighter crop of portrait-cant decide-fine image though and nice to see something different-hope you sent your son to bed without his dinner

I like this, John - in fact might try a similar shot on a swallowtail tomorrow morning! Always good to see something different :toast:

Works well for me, its good to see a different approach. Its a slight shame that the flower head is out of focus but with such a shallow depth of field on the macro it couldn't be avoided

Hi John,

I thought of you when driving through your part of the world recently. I was admiring all of the woods and thought, John R is in there somewhere, close to a pool. Anyway I digress.

I like the backlit wings and the background overall. The flower head being out of focus is a little distracting. Good and sharp for hand held.

Cheers

Austin

The forward facing pose adds a nice dynamic to the shot (I much prefer it to the 'standard' butterfly shot) and the back-light wacks out the colour in those wings. Great animal, like the shot.

Chris

a very nice looking butterfly John and great lighting. The only nit I would have is the out of focus seedhead which is a bit too dominant for me because of the shooting angle. There probably wasn't a solution to that problem though.

Thanks all again.
I don't think there is any way I could have got the sedge head in focus except by taking a shot when the butterfly had gone and doing a stack job .
Not for me !
Is really worth it ?
Pictures on this forum should be nature as is. Not nature as we want it to be,
Nuff said.
