Larry -

If you wrap a link in the URL wrapper (as shown in the Text Style Menu link below the text window) you can create clickable link, that opens the indicated page in a new window, like this: Solar Storms.

On the plus side, more solar storm means better aurora borealis.

Hey Larry - I work for the folks (BAE Systems in Manassas, VA) who made the computers - processors, memory, boards - that command those satellites and space probes from the article. (BAE Systems Radiation Hardened Electronics) Our specialty is making electronics that can withstand high radiation environments as well as large temperature ranges and other harsh environments. If you have any particular questions about the effects of solar radiation I might be able to fill you in.

Wikipedia has a very good, and pretty extensive, page that goes through all the basics.

Solar radiation is always a concern, and the solar cycle (and sun spot activity) always has to be considered. This page has a graph showing that were in a big down cycle, with expected increase.

Thanks David,

I've been reading how many military applications have been "hardened". Amazing how when human advance nature always keep the "tension" going.... Never ending battle and rather animating.

Thanks Jim,
I'm not a computer wiz. I've always wondered how some people could always get that clickable blue thing on the screen. I'll do a little plaing.

I need more instructions on "URL wrapper" if you have time. Is this feature on the site being visited or on my computer?

And for those who don't know how big the "down cycle" has been for sunspots, it is a once in a century event.

I guess the question is coming out of this large down-cycle [ coming out of down cycles has traditionally has caused more radiation] will there be more radiation in a culture that now has sensitive devices?

The use of brackets for text style (bold, italics, quotes, urls) is a feature of the site forums and the way it interprets postings. A lot of forums have some similar capability, but the actual use might be a little different. And a lot of forums use the actual HTML format style to do it - and this is a bit simpler than that.
