Starting to process some images from Eureka Dunes in DVNP. This was actually just as I was getting out of my car near the tables north of the dunes. I'm on the fence about this one, but since I processed it I wanted to post it and see if anyone has an opinion.
I did have some decent clouds that day, so I will definitely be posting a couple more.
Nice lines. I am particularly taken by the shadows, lines and swirls in the lower left third of the image. Small suggestion, maybe boost the white point in the clouds a little to make it pop a bit more?
Mat, I like the perspective here. I'm not sure I've ever seen this angle of view on all of the many dune shots I've seen over the years. This just happens to be a tad different, in a good way of course. I would also take a stab at the dropper on the cloud white point as Harley mentions. Otherwise, good to go.
I like the curving line and the gradations of tonality, plus some
interesting texture. The blue and white sky is complementary.
Is this an early morning or late afternoon shot?
I have been to the Eureka Dunes only once in my 4WD truck.
which I, unfortunately, no longer have. Getting in there on that
rough road, I think, wouldn't be good for my car's suspension.
What kind of transportation did you use?
This was taken in the afternoon. I drive a Subaru Impreza WRX. It was well graded up to the parking area when I was there in March -- I think any standard passenger car could make it, no problem.
Very nice image of the dunes, well dune. You got great contrast which i found hard in my images frm there. Light has just got to be right. I concur on the road just there last weekend and the road is freshly graded and not bad at all.
Nice take from Eureka Dunes. Love the dunes, lines and things going on in the sand, the sky not as much. But when I first opened this what I thought of were a bunch of sand surfers riding down the dune - at least it looks that way to me on the right side in the bowl area. Anyway, I'm with Harley and the interesting stuff on the left side in the sand; light, shadows, etc.
Mat,
As others have commented, this image has very nice lines. I agree with Harley, maybe tweek the white point just a liottle to bring out the clouds. Best Regards.
Mat, I think you've managed the contrast well in this image. The curved lines lead the eye through the image to explore the interesting patterns. More drama in the clouds would really round this out. I'll be interested to see your next images with more cloud coverage.
I’ve been to the Eureka dunes a number of times…once camped there for 3-weeks. The horizontal multi-toned patterns formed by the stratified layers of the Last Chance Range directly east of the dunes form an incredible backdrop to the dune system. In all the images I’ve seen from Eureka, none of them have quite succeeded in bringing together the light, perspective and framing that would approach the full potential of the possible compositions there.
wonderful image Mat! While I do like the sky, something still feels awkward about it here. Quickly playing with different crops to the sky, perhaps a tighter crop off the top of the sky?

EDIT: I tweaked the sky a little, see here.

Only been there once myself. Need to go back.

I would crop out every bit of the sky and turn this into an abstract pano of just the dunes.
