Thought this was pretty cool - a GPS unit hooked into a D1X or D2X to provide tagged info that can be used with applications like Google Earth.
The company is Red Hen Systems in Fort Collins. Here's the description from their website...I think the GPS unit runs about $395. Think of the possible applications!
The D1X-GPS & D2X-GPS are integrated solutions for tagging digital still images with GPS data. Using a consumer, off-the-shelf GPS unit and the industry leading Nikon D1X & D2X cameras, it allows users to directly capture geospatially referenced images in the easiest, most reliable collection method today.

Sounds great for personal use, but I wouldn't want GPS info in the meta data of my photos if they were on the web. I use my Garmin Vista to occassionally record photo spots. It sounds like a great product if you could use it.
I work with a couple of geologists who live and die by their ability to tie photos to GPS, both for eventual graphics work, but also for GIS and coordination with satelite images. I'm also aware that the technique or technology is creaping into law enforcement use, in order to help document ATV invasions of wilderness areas and other situations where boundary lines dictate what's legal what's not. Good point on the potential abuse if it's in your meta data.

I think two of the big applications were for insurance field agents assessing damage on-site (like after Katrina) - can tie the photos to claims, and for Forest Service agents to tie photos to field observations (current state of resources, erosion events, etc.)
I always thought it would be cool to be able to tag my photos to a map after returning from a trip so my friends/relatives could see where the shots were taken.
