What do you guys think about the new content aware fill tool?

I've heard some comments that it looks great when demonstrated on small web images, but falls appart when you look at the results closely in full rez files.

I held off getting the CS5 upgrade because I've been traveling. Just before placing my order last week, I stumbled across a few comments that made me reconsider. My primary motivation for the upgrade is the new content aware fill tool. I thought it would be great for those handheld panos that always have blanks when the alignment isn't perfectly horizontal.

Any feedback from those with hands-on experience would be greatly appreciated.

Bill, I've been experimenting a bit with content aware fill and I'm impressed. What I've found is that it works well fixing smaller areas, and if using a select tool, being precise in your selections and staying away from edges you don't want "fixed". On my post today, I had to clone out a small dried weed in the LLC. I used a small spot healing brush in CAF mode and simply traced the lines of the dead weed. Even at full res (5DMKii) I could not tell where things were repaired. It even matched up strands of grass. Pretty impressive stuff. One of the NPNers had a post (digital forum I think) that talked about a more precise technique where you create a selection and save it on a separate layer, then use CAF for extra precise repairs. I'll try to find it again and add to this post. So much for being wordy. I'm impressed so far by what I'm seeing.

I'm just starting to hammer away at my 5D2 images also Bill, I'll let you know what I find out. Sounds like Paul has it pretty much figured out though. One thing I keep hearing from Adobe experts is to work on smaller bits at a time, so I'll be testing that. Problem is, Premiere works so amazingly good now with 5D2 footage, I'm spending too much time in it and not Photoshop!

Check out this video around the 7-minute mark. The whole thing's excellent, but that portion is relevant to your question. http://photocascadia.wordpress.com/2010/05/06/211/

Now, I'm off to watch the next part!

Thanks, Todd. The video answers my question very well, at least for relatively small areas.
You certainly can't ask for better performance than that.
I'm guessing the people that have had issues are trying to fill much larger areas.

Bill.... I have had great success experimenting w/ content aware. One tip that I have picked up is to expand your selection by a very small margin (3-5 pixels depending on res). By doing so, you allow photoshop to get as much image info as close to the fill area as possible. In my experiments, this has proved to be key. I am very happy with this feature overall.

I haven't used CS5 yet but a friend has the same consensus. It works for removing/fixing small things very well but is not good at large things; such as the road adobe removed in their demo video.
