I was down in Roxborough State Park last weekend for their special 5:00 am opening. Of the shots I took I liked this one the best. Comments and critique are welcomed.
Thanks
Randy

Very pretty image, looks like a fantastic area. Love those greens, probably would make a great pano crop as well.

Really nice composition and gorgeous colors throughout. Well worth getting up early for!

Gorgeous, Randy! Comp, colors, sky, and processing are all great. I think you could also make this work by cropping a bit of the sky and going with more of a pano format.

Thanks for the comments folks. Here's a pano crop of the same scene.

That is some sweet light! Ditto on the comp, colors, and processing. Very well done!

5:00 am opening? What 5:00 am opening? You sure made it work. I definitely like it with less sky.

I love the scene here. To my tastes, this is a bit over-saturated, but it could be my monitor - the greens, yellows, and reddest areas of the rocks seem to be a bit too colorful to be natural to my eye.

Nice shot... man I wish I knew about the 5am opening.

So this is what Roxboroough looks like at 5 am? I wasn't aware of a special opening either. How does one find out about these?

Those colors really pop out! Very nice!

Wow, what vibrant colors!

For all who are interested in early openings at Roxborough SP, you can check the park website. They (usually) have the early opening dates posted. Or, call the park office and ask when the next one might be. They only do this a couple of times each year; chances are the next early opening will be after flower season is done.

As others have said, the colors are wonderfully vibrant. And the high clouds add a lot to the image almost reflecting the rock formation. Wonderful capture.

Colors are amazing.

Great shot indeed and the crop I think makes it even stronger.

Even if the park doesn't "open" at 5am most days, you can still park outside and walk in, can't you? I've never tried but I just assumed it'd be like other state and national parks where even if the toll booth wasn't open, you could still go in and just pay on your way out.

Yep, some nice soft light that the later hours just don't normally give you. My preference is for the full image: I think the blues in the upper part of the image add a nice balance to the greens of the bottom. The red rocks and yellow early morning light is the icing on the cake.

Matt,

Technically I believe the park itself is closed off-hours. It's not just that the toll booth isn't running - the park is designated for day use only and is gated shut after-hours.

Thanks again everyone for taking the time to comment. I didn't punch up the colors in this shot, I only increased the contrast and the original shot was taken with a vivid color setting.

"I didn't punch up the colors in this shot, I only increased the contrast..."
Increasing contrast will automatically add saturation to an image unless you remediate it afterward.

Beautiful color, light and composition. I wish I had know about the 5am opening , I hope there's another one soon. :frown:
