Red Grouse Calling
Thanks for the comments on my Golden Plover. Here is another 'calling' image. Living close to a Grouse Moor I have lots of images of these birds but realised I had relatively few of them calling. This one is from slightly earlier this year when the males were defending their territory and looking their best. This is full frame but presented 7x5 rather than 6x4. I tried shooting the image landscape but it was tight at the top, so portrait with the tail merging into the mush worked better imo.

7D 700mm ISO:160 1/640 sec @ f/5.6 A smidge of exposure and a levels boost in Lightroom but nothing else done.

Cheers, Simon :wavey:

Always good to see them calling and the mush is just enough I feel. Portrait works well. Might just add a fraction more USM? Glad to see you have got out, the weather has been very poor over the past week and quite a few of the birds have just hunkered down.

Looks a touch dark on here but in work so could be the monitor. Personally I'd like to see this more of a landscape format with more space to the right of the bird.

Lovely rich colours - the red really pops against the dark brown. I would also like to see it as a landscape.

a touch of curves to 200 and a dose USM as suggested just lifts the image to the heights it deserves..Comp works for me. :toast:

I must like them a bit gloomy. Here is a lifted one with some more USM. The bottom of the beak has a bit of motion blur as it chattered away at 1000mph  Cheers

I keep coming back to this and glad you've reposted as it looks lovely now. The only thing i can't make my mind up over is with the rear of the bird being cut away - that's why I keep coming back to it..... :toast:
