Well It's been a long time since posting here, but I do stop by every once and awhile to check in. Just got back from a week long trip in Yosemite Valley where I attended a black and white digital printing workshop at the Ansel Adams Gallery. I have found myself gravitating more and more towards that medium. It was a wonderful trip and a great experience. Unbelievable amounts of run-off occuring out there made for some dramatic water falls and flooded merced river.
The workshop concentrated on printing but we did manage to get out and shoot a few times. On our first evening we went up to Happy Isles and I made this image. I wasn't sure if this was going to be a keeper until I started proof prints. It only took 5 8x10 proofs 'til I got it where I was happy with it, then made a print on 24x36 paper. That's the largest I've ever printed and quite honestly I was shocked at how well it turned out in all regards.
I captured this single image on my 5d, processed in DPP and developed in CS2.
Since Tioga Pass was closed last weekend we went over Sonora Pass which had just opened . What a wonderful scenic drive that was all the way 'til the park.
Glad to see you're still hangin' around. This is gorgeous! I'm certain that large print is amazing. Great work with the b&w too.
Now you have to know that Jason, Harley and I all worked this tree a month ago. I saw this comp and failed to follow up with actually taking a picture. I'm regretting that now. I have an image with just the trunk, water and some of the rocks. Looks like there's more water now than a month ago.
I'd be curious to see or hear if Jason or Harley got anything from here.
I'm glad you captured this though. Fabulous image from Happy Isles.
thanks for compliments! After printing this I'm not surprised that this particular oak and scene have been shot before, especially since it's right off the trail! I'd be interested in seeing what you guys came away with as well. This was our introduction to "quiet light". Indeed it was. Thanks again for the comment, it's always appreciated.
Even on my crummy monitor at work, this looks gorgeous. The lighter leaves of the oak keep the top half of the frame interesting, so it's not just about the river.
Wow Cory, the wait was worth it. Beautiful image. The feel of he moving water really comes across. The B&W just works so well here. The print must be fantastic. Best Regards.
