Golden Ringed + another flat on
C. boltonii.
Nice fresh male turned up near the garden today. Another of my son's discoveries !
Side view showed the wings better as square on they were lost in the background, Shame as it sat there for half an hour and a lot of pictures.
Nothing you can do when the background is so near to the subject.
D200
Sigma 150mm macro

Nice one John, as you say nothing you can do about the background in this situation but it still contrasts well, can't believe your good fortune at it sitting there for half an hour every dragon I saw today was hyperactive, good for you frustrating for me! Well done

Hi Shaun
I really meant the ones where the insect was square to the camera. There were a load of bracken stems close to the subject in the background. It's ok to use a wide aperture to get the backdrop out of focus but in this case it lost detail in sll the insect. I'll post one later to show you what I mean.
Cheers

Great shot John haven't seen one of these round my way for a couple of years now they are greatly missed, nice to see a fresh subject.

Nice catch John, I like the square crop too.
I find these guys are a lot more difficult to capture than birds.

Very nice. The wasp-like colour scheme is very striking.

Thanks
I've included one of the "flat " ones to show what I mean about backgrounds even at a wideish aperture - f7 in this case. All you need is the bracken stem on its own which is almost impossible.
Hope the mods don't mind. Cheers
