Hi everyone. After spending a few hrs today trying to capture some more Hoverflies in flight, I became transfixed by their ariel agility. No longer was it a goal to capture them in flight, but to show 'wing blur' as well. It took many many attempts, but I got two images. Here is one, all C&C's most welcome. I think I have the Species right, but they are difficult to identify, so if I'm wrong, please tell me!
I thought the Purple patch Graham refers to was the wing blur, is it? either way I love the shot which must have taken ages to get right.

Great shot Paul. I think that this may be a female Scaeva pyrastri - I don't really like ID'ing hovers from photographs but the leg colour and shape of the white markings on the tergites look right. Hairy eyes would be the clincher but that would be asking too much of a flight shot :) Are you in the South of England? S. pyrastri is thought to be largely migratory and they very rarely gets up to us here in Scotland.

No idea on species but that is some flight shot.

Not sure if the purpleish patch behind the fly detracts, but that is a very minor nit on an image that must have taken you a long time to achieve
