Storm Chasing no Regrets (well, some)
With the action so close, i had to use my 'weekend' (Thu,Fri) to chase some storms in NE CO. Made a crucial mistake of staying too far north (NE) on Thu and ended up missing an amazing tornado/storm at Last Chance (when i saw what i missed i nearly cried) But i still caught some amazing storms, including this one that started west of Calhan and followed 24-70 out almost to Burlington. This was from the Calhan highway--if you see this headed toward your house--take cover!

2) the fields were very green and made for interesting subjects, especially against a stormy sky

3) Cumulus two-tone

4) The grasslands between Sterling and Limon were real pretty in the afternoon.

5) Wall cloud from supercell thunderstorm near Pawnee Buttes (would have been interesting to see a tornado hit those wind turbines  )

6) Little house on the Palmer Divide. Thats all--one more at ESS!

Nice, diverse collection, Stan. You could call #4 "Poor Man's Palouse." And I love #2, really stylin'. I'm headed for the Pawnee area next week. Hope there's some interesting weather then.

Gorgeous shots, Stan! I'm a weather geek and a spotter for the NWS - I remember a bunch of tornadoes one year when we lived in Brighton, Colorado in the early 80's. Lots of damage in Denver and surrounding suburbs. We had a small one touch down in the "back 40" - we lived on a ranch back then - no damage, but cool to see!!!
Great shots - thanks for sharing!!!!

Stan these are awesome. #2 and #6 are great shots. Can you get close to those wind turbines?
Posted by Stan Rose on June 13, 2010 at 1:59 PM
I believe so, Koveh, but i wasnt about to try since there was baseball size hail thatta way

You can drive right past the turbines up there. They're behind barbed wire fences for the most part, but plenty close enough to roads that you can shoot 'em.

Liking the light and colors in the grass in #2 and that is a good wall cloud shot in #5. Looks like the rotation was better organized with that pawnee storm than in #1 where is looks more like scud.

Great stuff, Stan. I prefer the last one from a compositional and drama standpoint, but that first one is fascinating.

I also love this type of photography, as I get to see areas I normally would never see.
Some real dramatic shots here...I like all of 'em!

Some serious storm clouds! How did #4 slip in there?

Each one of those puffy cu clouds has the potential to become a deadly storm, DJ
