I'm thinking of heading over to Maroon Bells and Aspen area tomorrow. Has anyone been there recently? What is the general condition of the trees/lake? (Are the tree in full leaf now?). It looks like Independence Pass is open (from the CDOT site)...if you've heard differently, please let me know.
Thanks!

I was there, going on about two weeks ago now. Indy Pass was opened Memorial weekend. At that time the trees at Maroon were well before prime, but a lot can happen in two weeks... at the time we were guessing that about now would be prime time. I'm heading up there this week too, let me know your schedule if you want to meet up.

I came very close to swinging around to da Bells after Cottonwood Pass on Saturday to catch sunrise yesterday, but headed south instead. I think Nat's prediction of right about now being peak conditions for vibrant green aspens is right on the money. Plus, the snow that fell over the weekend might've covered up all that old, brown snow!

Thanks, guys. I'm planning to head out there late tonight (from Denver) and catch sunrise tomorrow morning. Won't stay too long. Will probably poke around Ashcroft area or Indy pass after sunrise and head home in the afternoon.
