County Fair Silver!

Sometimes you just never know. I've been entering the Alameda Country Fair for as long as I can remember. Done pretty well over years with some awards and selling a print here or there. This year not too motivated.

Entered this as a large, framed print. Rejected. Entered this attached "fun" image. Accepted, Silver Award. Go Figure. Only 14 Silvers out of I'm estimating at least 600 entries.

Ok, it's not nature, but it's California! Classic Santa Cruz Beach and Boardwalk image. 5 image stitch from the pier, windy as heck, hand-held with my Panasonic little pt-n-shoot.

Check the LARGER image here and tell me how many stitching anomalies you can find in the water...

Anyway, printed this 4"x18" matted in a standard white aluminum frame at 12"x25."

I think it got an award for the local and cute factor with all the exaggerated color. What do you think?

I'm not complaining - I'll take the cash any day.

So, anyone else enter and get accepted or get an award? Chime in!

Lon

ps. Sorry for not being so active around here... I've been keep my head buried in the ES&S sand....

Time to throw away the LF camera, Lon

Seriously though, stitching artifacts aside, it's a nice image. Definitely something I can see lots of tourists dropping some cash on. I would much rather have the wood image on my wall, but I'm not your average tourist either.

:toast: Way cool, Lon. For me the image(s) / print, give the look of days gone by. As such it also holds a real nostalgic feeling to the scene. Very nicely done IMO.

I guess you've got to give the people what they want  For what it is, though, this is well done. And considering the market for this type of image, I don't think stitching anomalies are going to be much of an issue.

Congrats. Cancel all the trips to Yosemite and tree images. You have a future with a P&S! The image is nice, very much looks like a painting. Not exactly fine art, but give the peasants what they want.

Thanks guys. Yes, I could toss away the large format. If I do that though, I'll recommend everyone toss away their thousands of dollars worth of dslrs and just use a <$200 camera from Costco. Who needs all that expensive glass, bodies or film?

Fun stuff though

Lon,

Congratulations on the award! That's an interesting take n the boardwalk.

Based upon your win, I am selling all my LF and MF gear so that I can be free of my film crutch! Not!

btw: the image you linked to is one of my favorites of yours! Beautiful!

Lon,

This is a very nice image and most of the non photo shooting and especially editing public are not going to notice the slight stitching defects. But this goes a long way towards illustrating the huge gulf that exists between the image appreciating and buying public and the guys behind the lenses, cameras, and squinting into Computer Crts. It took me a long time to get decent images out of my E-500 and my 4 editing programs I tried and now I got a D300 to learn no way am I dumping them for a PS now matter how nice it works.

Lon,

Congrats on the award. Funny what people find appealing. Although it is a nice image but to me very heavy on the cyan. Oh, and I can see 5 stitching anomalies in the water.

Lon,
Congratulations on the Silver award. Its well deserved, but strange that it wasn't for one of your Yosemite tree images. Its so hard to know what the judges are looking for and you have some many fine landscape images I hope you never give up on LF. I submitted 6 images and 5 were accepted. One of my MF images of Bonsai Rock at Tahoe won a Silver. Like you, I'll happily take the cash! Again, congratulations on the Silver. Best Regards.

Lon,

Congrats on the award.

The sky is great. It really adds to the nice image of a Boardwalk that is there every day.

Congrats on the silver and taking the cash prize! Just goes to show that bigger isn't always better, in terms of resolution and detail. ;)
