I was hopeing someone might be familiar with this lens. I am researching a possible purchase, but am unfamiliar with Promaster equipment. Can anyone recommend this lens or give me advice on what a good mid-range priced wide-angle is a good buy?

Thanks,
E

"Promaster" sounds hilarious as a brand name. I don`t know but probably something like all the various rebrands of Cosina-made equipment - Soligor et al.

I`d firmly suggest to stay away from anything not by your camera maker or by a well-known third party company (Sigma, Tamron, Tokina) - just to be on the safe side.

What focal length do you need? Film or digital body? 12mm on a film body is preetty darn wide... The gurus here can help you for sure but you need to give some more info.

good luck!

The new (April) Popular Photography has a good review on the ultra-wides for digital cameras. It includes Sigma, Tokina, Tamron, and the Nikon, Canon, Pentax, and Minolta.

Thanks everyone. I bought the April ed. of Pop Photo and it is a helpful article, especially since it recommends the Sigma lens, which I had already decided to purchase, for $100.0 less than that unknown Promaster. Thanks,
E

I believe the Promaster 12-24 is a rebadged Tokina 12-24. So you should get the same quality as the tokina.

Promaster has traditionally been made by Sigma, at least they used to be.
