I’ve sent a lot of time in two hides with the Sand Martins this year.
( As you get older you do have a lot of time but it might run out sort of quick like.)
They were bathing and drinking at one pool in the quarry and I’ve managed to get them perching on Phragmites stems after a bit of work.. Trouble is – when do the do it.? They are in fact quite regular and it turned out that the best time was in the evening at 7:30 - 8:30. get ready for a glut of SM pics !
I’ve had some wonderful sessions and a friend who does HD video, set up next to my permanent hide the other night.
After the bathing, drinking and preening frenzy had ended we got out of the hides after getting some wonderful stuff.
I said to Derek –
“If I had to pick one bird I would like to spend the whole season working on it would be Sand Martins - I love the little things “
He replied ,after lighting a roll up-
“ If I could pick a bird to spend the season with it would be Kate Winslett ! “
