Taken at Stover at the weekend. This Grebe appeared to be building a nest - but it was on it's own. Do they practise building nests?
There were another two pairs out on the lake doing their courtship rituals, but this guy? was on his own and not a mate in site.
Perhaps a juvenile?
Anyway, he was swimming along and I panned to get this shot. Don't know what you think? Not much photoshop done. A bit of cloning out distacting lights, bit of contrast and sharpening.
Also, first time I have tried a bit of fill-flash. Didn't seem to make much difference (i know, it's not meant to, but the shadows should lift!), but is it possible to use the 550ex straight off the camera shoe or does it really need lifting to get pass the 500/4 lens hood?
Comments appreciated, Graeme

Hi Graeme,
94 views and 0 comments - thats not right!
Very nice shot of the Grebe - sharp and shows the red eye perfectly. Shame the reflection was disturbed by the water but can't have everything!
Some very nice images on your site - I see you managed to get the full woodpecker at yarner - no mean feat I know!
Well it's actually 224 views and now 1 comment thanks to you
Beginning to wonder what exactly is wrong with it. If no one comments -I guess I'll never know! Kinda defeats the object of a critique forum!!
ok now you{ve got two!!! as for the comments, or lack of, yes it is something strange that happens with the forum and probably not just this one. one thing i have noticed about this forum is that images like this one, that dont have anything wrong with them, dont gather much comment as theres not much to critique, as theres not much wrong with it. of course there are the other type of image that gather lots of critique just because they are stunning in their own right, or of a not often seen subject.
whilst your image is excellent, if i remember rightly about this time last year there were a lot of grebe images posted, and probably there will be a lot posted this time this year, so probably its a subject that suffers a little critique fatigue. maybe if you got a pic of a grebe being eaten by a lion, you might get a lot of comments. i guess in this way it is possible to learn not just from critique posted directly at your own images, but also from reading critique of other similar subjects etc, at least this is one way that UKNP is valuable to me as i learn a lot from reading peoples views in general on all types of posts.
ok well, you probably already know all this.....anyway, keep posting and keep looking for lions at your local lake!!
Composition looks good, shame that the reflection was not sharp, that would have been the icing on the cake,. Still a lovely grebe shot. Can not comment on colours/contrast as the red channel has gone on my monitor!
