It was pretty cool being on the Pikes Peak Highway when it was still dark, and even cooler hiking for a mile when it was so dark that even my headlight didn't do much. If I didn't have some waypoints in my GPS, I would have missed the turn from one trail to another. But I digress...
The reason I wanted to be on Pikes Peak was to shoot this scene at sunrise. Ever since I stumbled on to it about a year ago (the wheels of government grind slowly), I felt it would be a good sunrise spot.
A HDR merge of two TIFFs converted from RAW and then saved as JPEG for this site.
Kudos to you, Bob, for setting it all up in the first place! That act alone gets you a mulligan for posting this pic larger than what is allowed.
I recognize this from your previous posts, and I must say, you called it just right on being an excellent sunrise spot, esp. this time of year with the sun rising so far north of east. I wouldn't mind seeing a wee bit more detail in the darkest elements, but either with that fix or not, this is really nice.
Wow!
This is outstanding, Bob!! I like every single thing about it, from capture to development
This is the type of HDR shot that I just love. Composition and light are both excellent.
May be one of your best ever!
Finally, major kudos to you for helping get this place opened for photographers.
You oughta consider giving a print to the gov't. agent who did the most work in seeing that process through.
You might also consider sending this to your local paper with a description of the circumstances leading up to it.
Thanks, everyone.
I knew this was going to be a tough shot, and I had never done HDR work that was very successful.
I did this in kind of a hurry, and when I get a little time, I'll see if I can improve it a little.
John, I am composing a letter of thanks to both the city councilman who helped me along, and the gentleman from the highway who actually made this a reality. A gift photo isn't a bad idea, either.
I sent the Gazette a slightly different shot, and they have posted it in their outdoor blog.
