Interesting conditions in the Gorge this past weekend.

Mike, it is a nice scene, but I think it lacks impact. Cropping to square by eliminating the left side and just a touch at the right will focus the attention more on the train. Also, adding a touch of contrast wouldn't hurt. Just my thoughts. :wavey:

I think Tim has some good points. I think after a crop and some burning of the sky this will be a stong image.

swami,
i don't normally comment on your train images, or many images for that matter, but i must say that i like this image for the fact that the subtle, film/negative colors and tones provide a very soothing, calming, real life view of a wonderful scene. very nice as is.

Swami,
I've looked at this a few times and I couldn't figure out why I liked this so much. I think Jim hit the nail on the head. The train also gives a good distance perspective.

I like this one as it is. I can also see the benefits of a square crop as mentioned previously.
For me, the most outstanding element in this photo is that the train, which we all know them to be very large, appears to be rather tiny in the scene. Just a perfect example of how small man is versus nature.
As for the photo as a whole, I like the subtle tone/color and that fact that there is no sharp object visible. Perhaps it is not the best photo of a train in the gorge, but it sure is a nice photo of a train in the gorge.

great graphics, Swami. I could go for a square crop with a little off the left side.

Agree with the crop suggestions and a little more contrast overall... Nice work as always! :toast:

Thanks for the feedback. I did dim the sky a little for this version: http://swamiphoto.homeip.net/swami/images/gorgetrains/lyle-031206-1-1000.jpg

But I am resisting the idea of a crop, because of the uniqueness of this causeway. Making it look like it isn't out in the middle of the river loses that aspect of the photo. The Gorge is unique in many respects with the railroads ... they went through lots of trouble back 100 years ago (with some updates when they put in the dams and moved the river) only because it was easier than going over the cascades!
