...East Half of the Buffalo National River Trails Illustrated Topo Map. I shot this in April of 2009, but never worked with it too much until now. I don't know who sketched this view of the Middle Buffalo area on the TI map, but I've always liked it. So I decided to see for myself and had to take a picture or two.
Due mainly to the thick haze/thin clouds, my shots of the eclipse from Mt. Magazine were not as good as I would have liked. What I've seen here so far is much better than anything I got.
Bill, great take on the Buffalo. The tree in the foreground and the canoe on the river really give one a sense of scale here. I really like the colors, especially the water!
I was thinking of heading up to Mount Magazine but decided to stay close due to the clouds. Did you make your moon shot from the Cameron Bluff overlook area?
Bill, well executed as always with your images. Love the comp with tree and branches framing the shot. For those of us as unfamiliar with the area, can you give us a hint as to where this is. Thanks,
Joe Rogers
Joe, this overlook is on top of Peter Cave Bluff - named for a cave where Civil War troops mined saltpeter to make gunpowder. It's described on p.112 of both the second and third editions of Tim Ernst' Buffalo River Hiking Trails guidebook. A great place to have a cold one...but just one. It's about 250' down to the river.
Tom, I had the famous juniper in mind, but the angle of the moon didn't work too well, so I went over to an unoccupied (I think) rental cabin and shot from the deck. There was also a hot tub, so I figured that was as good a place as any for a final "moonshot". Just kidding, of course, but the idea was certainly tempting!
It makes me feel good that your eclipse shots did not turn out.
Moon is hard for me.
Mine were not good either.
Oh, more to the point--good eye and great comp.
