I have some great shots that look good on a "huey" calibrated screen. When I go to print them they turn out dark - colour profiles are set and paper matches the printer and latest icc profiles are on the computer. My question is whether or not the monitor calibration software covers brightness? I have my screen brightness down as low as it will go.
Thanks in advance,
Lindy
If the calibration hardware doesn't make any mention of brightness, then it isn't addressed.
Try lowering the brightness (luminance) in your graphics card control panel instead of using the monitor's controls to where the luminance matches your prints, then brighten your prints with your image editing software.
Also, try making a print at an online commercial printing outfit like Mpix just to ensure that the monitor brightness is the culprit.
The Huey generally walks you through a brightness adjustment procedure, but it depends on your ability to turn down your brightness successfully. If your graphics card control allows you to adjust brightness you can try that, but that would likely alter the accuracy of your monitor profile. Are you on an iMac by any chance? The previous generation of iMacs were notorious for not allowing photographers to reduce brightness to the level required for good image adjustment.

We wrote an article on this whole subject for one of our newsletters if that helps:
