Hi, everyone - I haven't been here for about a year, by now. Too busy with work and other projects, and hardly any time for photography.
but that will soon change - I'm going to spend 2 weeks in the Galapagos Islands in mid-April. I'm looking for suggestions re lenes to take. I'm hoping my 28-200 plus a closeup lens will be enough. I really don't want to drag the 50-500. I may spend a few days in the amazoin at the end of the trip, though, and any hope of birds might need the big lens.
I'm looking for suggestions and tips from people who have been there. also, wher would i find a 80-400VR for my Nikon D1X, if i wanted to rent one? I'm east of Portland, Oregon.
Thanks to all! Sandy Richards

Sandy, Glazer's in Seattle has an 80-400 VR on their list of rental equipment for $20/day.

You will be clambering up and over many rough rocks and encountering some wet landings. I woulldn't suggest carrying much more than two or three lenses. My personal choice is a wide zoom ( I used a 24-50), a macro (105VR?), and a medium tele zoom (I used a 70-210, but would now take my 70-200 VR and a 1.4X TC). A tripod might be too cumbersome (I always left mine on the boat) though I might consider a walking stick/monopod for the rough "trails". Flash was not allowed when I was there, though I have heard that the guides might look the other way for small fill-flashes. Too bad as the high contrasts and shadow areas need fill-in.
