Herron Poised for Fisch, er uhh
Taken Wedenesday at Branner Creek Lake near Holton Kansas.

Taken from a boat while seeking the elusive bass.

Nikon d300, 18-200 at 200 [effective 300mm].

Have an enjoyable and safe 4th of July.

Hey Larry, Nice attempt from a moving boat. The body of the bird seems to be in focus while the head and neck are a little soft. I like the composition of the shot with the head below the edge of the water in the top of the shot. Hope the bass were biting... I'm going to try Wednesday..

Took me awhile to get the "poised for Fisch" (I'm a bit slow!). Do you keep your gear in waterproof boxes or anything while in a boat?

Scott, I had the camera in a case but it was not waterproof.
I have been burned once by water [or rather the camera was] and it is VERY good idea to have it at least in a 'ziplock'.
For serious stuff like motoring a canoe up an Alaskan river I have Pelican or Tundra cases.
This day I was on a good sized boat, calm water, etc. so I wasn't too worried. But, as you have intimated, strange things can and do happen around water.

Merle,

Yup the boat was rocking slight and this was a 200 mm x 1.5 = 300 mm shot so wasn't too bad. I was on "active" stabilization but I don't know how effective that magic is.

Also I think the bird was in molt.

Note the lack of feathers [red spot] on the "shoulder".

I think the feathers on the head were not in good condition. That plus slight movement of boat/camera probably detracted from the crispness on would desire.
