A well-deserved honor. I still think California needs to initiate declaring a Galen Rowell Wilderness somewhere in the Sierra, right along Ansel Adams and John Muir.

I agree, a wonderful tribute to an inspirational person. Hopefully a Sierra wilderness is next!

The photographic comunity lost an icon with his passing. To climb is one thing, to do great photography is yet another, but the ability to master both was truely outstanding! I have one of his early books and was just blown away with it. I think that soon it will have several pages of stamps in it. I never got to meet him or his wife but wish I had. Robert Hice Jr.

Not to be a grinch here, but I sure wish the USPS had picked something more unique to Galen. Just about everyone but me has the image that they used on the stamp

He deserves this. As for Wilderness areas, I think getting one named for you is considerably tougher than getting a peak named after you. There are hundreds of unnamed peaks in the Sierra just waiting for his name on them! The late climber Alex Lowe just had a peak in Montana officially announced in his name.

Perhaps the reason they chose Gates of the Valley because of the symbolism? One American icon deserves another.

Congratulations Galen, too bad it didnt' happen four years sooner.

I hear the Pope is about to make him a saint also!

Awesome! This is certainly a well deserved honor for Galen. I'll third (or fourth, or fifth) Guy's suggestion to name a wilderness area or peak after him.

I've always been blown away by his images and the one they have picked is one of my favourites.

If anyone would like to help me out I would love a collectors sheet or whatever of the shots they are using. PM me or email if you would/could help out or point me to a website where I could purchase the stamos

Thanks

Doesn't appear to be released yet, but I'd watch that link for goodies.
