I am travelling to Indonesia on July 16th to photograph a few areas and I am wondering if anyone out there has shot in this country before and has any ideas for a photographers area of interest in Bali, Lombok, Kuta, and the Java area, some nice landscapes, specific waterfalls, beaches, islands, culture etc. this will be my first time to Indonesia and my second time to SE Asia.
I've never been there, but Indonesia has limitless landscapes and cultural intrigue and you should be able to capture some unique images there.
I am continually updating a list of amazing places I'd like to see in the world, and these are the places that I've noted in Indonesia so far: The Ruins of Borobudar, The Three Craters of Bromo, Raja Ampat, Komodo Island, Segara Anak Lake, Purah Tanah Lot temple, Pura Ulun Danau lake temple, Sumba Island, Banda Islands, Flores, Baliem Valley. Many of these recommendations come from travellers I've met on the road, others are from my own internet explorations. Hopefully this will give you a bit of an overview of where to start. Have an awesome trip!
I spent a couple of weeks in Indo a couple of years ago. The Tanah Lot temple is quite photogenic (and very touristy). It's near Denpasar and is easy to get to. The rice paddies are very photogenic I saw some wonderful areas between Kuta and Medewei, which is about 3-4 hours up the south coast towards Java. I'd suggest you hire a taxi to scout the areas out, and then return at sunrise or sunset.
Lombok is the place to go if you're looking for tropical beach scenes - it's much less touristy and very beautiful. Hire a taxi or rent a motorbike, you'll be overwhelmed by the photographic opportunities. Have fun out there!
Awesome thanks guys i will look into the areas of a few of the places you said mike, thanks for the ideas...and I will definatly take note of the Tanah Lot Temple, I dont mind touristy things sometimes, and I am planning on going to the rice patties...I like the idea of touring around lombok for beaches I will be there for a few days so I will probably put that on my list for a day.....My biggest plan is that I will be camping on Mt.Rinjani to photograph sunset and sunrise on the top of a volcano.....cant wait
Tanah Lot is awesome at sunset....as is the Monkey Forest. You can get generic tours with lots of face time with vendors or rent a private car/driver and give them your itinerary. Big benefit is you can say "Hey pull over!"
