I've found an issue with my canon 70-300 f4-5.6 IS. This has been documented other places on the web as well. When shooting in landscape, the lens creates a relatively sharp image across the entire frame. However, when shooting in Portrait orientation, the upper and lower portions of the image are significantly out of focus while the center is sharp.
I'm going to send this lens in to Canon for repair. Hopefully all will be well when it returns.

Are you talking the program Modes on your camera Landscape/Portrait or what you are shooting?

I'm talking about the orientation of the camera. When holding the camera in portrait orientation, the problem is apparently a shift in the lens barrel which causes the top and bottom of the image to go wildly out of focus.

I've placed some sample images of this problem in this album.
They are the pictures of the fence. The landscape sample was taken from the same quadrant of the lens as the portrait top right image.
As you can see the portrait center is OK, but the portrait top right is not so much.
