Memory Card Recovery

I've got a friend whose son managed to accidentally format an SDHC memory card in a Canon Point and Shoot. I've suggested that he contact Canon support or one of the camera stores in town but thought someone might know of a recovery utility. That's assuming of course that the data is still there and not actually overwritten or erased. His son did stop using the camera immediately after the format was done.

Thanks.

Pat, a recovery utility program can be downloaded from SanDisk

It does work and I think only one or two images were not recovered

I tried to find the download from Sandisk - I couldn't find it so I didn't reply.

If anyone has the link, could you post it? I know there are more people who could use it.

Pat, not great news... the one utility I know of is SanDisk RescuePro, and it is software that gets bundled with some higher-priced cards or purchased. I got the software with a card I bought, then had to register the software and get a product key mailed to me. To buy it outright is $60 and that's for a YEAR subscription (as a software developer I think that's over the top, it should be a full purchase).

What you CAN do is go ahead and download the free trial here. The trial will do the recovery, you just can't save your recovered files. BUT, it's a way to see if the utility will even work. I used mine once on a friend's SD card with 1200 images that went belly up, and the RescuePro software recovered all of them.

If it does work, I'm more than happy to offer to do the recovery for you. I know that may be uncomfortable since we've never met, but maybe I can get a few folks around here to vouch for me, lol! If you find another way to get them restored, great, but the offer is there if you want. I can burn your images to CD, DVD or Blu-ray, whatever works best, and get that mailed back to you pronto. Once the disc is in your hands, I certainly promise to delete the images from my world and NOT look at them. Shoot me an email if you'd like, and if not, absolutely no offense taken!

Thanks very much you all. I'll send this on to my friend. I really appreciate the prompt help with it. The images are from his son's highschool band trip and I know they hate to lose them.

Paul, I would have been quite comfortable sending the disk to you and appreciate your offer.

Thanks.
