My Dell 19" CRT finally bit the BIG one. It powers up, but no video at all. I even tried it on another machine--zip, zilch, nada.
After doing a little research, I found a NEC P221W. The reviews at B&H are all positive, but I wondered if anyone here is using a NEC P-Series monitor, and what your thoughts are about it?
I'll probably be using a Monaco Optix-XR with X-Rite software for calibration.
I need this pretty quick, so any help you can provide over the next couple of days is much appreciated.
Preston,
I have the P221W. I haven't had any problems with it. It is wide gamut monitor. It has worked very well for me. I have been pleaded with the results. I would buy another one when needed. My came with Xrite Eye One calibrator. The calibrator works well. It only works on this monitor though.

Preston, I use an NEC2690WUxi2, the most fantastic screen I have ever owned or even seen The Spectraview calibration software is simple and easy to use. It was expensive, but worth every cent and I could honestly not imagine doing without it! Based on my experience I would say, you cannot go wrong with NEC.
Thanks for the additional info Preston. I just started setting my new P221W today. I'm having a little challenge getting it calibrated properly. I'm using their Spectraview software but it still isn't quite right. I'm thrilled to learn from you Preston that I can use it in Portrait mode. I could have had this for a year and never realized that.
Hi Erik,
I don't know if you're still having trouble calibrating your monitor?
When I first bought a P221W, I had trouble as well - the colour wasn't very stable - I could calibrate the next hour and see that the colours had shifted already.
I wrote to NEC Support and they immediately sent me a new monitor via Fedex - that one worked fine and has been working fine ever since...
Maybe this helps.
Ingrid.

Many thanks for your help and input. I'll be ordering the P221W and the SpectraView II software today from B&H.
I did a little research and found that my current colorimeter, Monaco Optix-XR, is compatible with SpectraView, so I saved about $200!
Thanks again,

I used the SpectraView-II software and my Monaco Optix-XR colorimeter. The process took about ten minutes, and went without a hitch!
One thing that I either missed in my research, or wasn't stated, is that the monitor screeen can be rotated into portrait mode.
This monitor is wonderful! Highly recommended!

Be sure you have the very latest manufacturer's driver for your video card. In your video card driver, set all color there management to default.
Also, be sure to view the ReadMe file for the SpectraView software.
According to my reading, you'll get the best results using DVI input, rather than VGA. I am using DVI.
Here's a list of colorimeters that are compatible with SpectraView...
If yours is not on this list, you'll need to obtain one of them and install it's driver.
•GretagMacbeth Eye-One Display V1
•X-Rite/GretagMacbeth Eye-One Display V2
•X-Rite/GretagMacbeth Eye-One Monitor, Eye-One Pro.
•X-Rite ColorMunki.
•Monaco OptixXR (X-Rite DTP 94).
•ColorVision/Datacolor Spyder 2.
•Datacolor Spyder 3.
I hope some of this info helps, Erik.
ps: I haven't tried portrait mode as of yet, but I will--I'm sure it will be handy for certain things.
