I am in the market for a good 2x teleconverter. I see so many of them and I am very confused. I have a Canon 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM lens. I plan to upgrade to a better glass within the next year. In the meantime, I would like to capture some wildlife shots now that SPRING is just around the corner.
Hi Lavanya,
the best teleconverter for Canon is the Canon EF II. That said, I think that it is not compatible with any 70-300 zoom...even if it was, you would get a very soft, manual focus 140-600 f/8-f/11 lens :-/
The Canon 2x is as good as it gets. That said you have to decide what you want to use it on. The better the prime lense you use the better the results. I have used it on my Canon 500 and my Canon 100-400 and have been pleased. I have tested the Tamron 2x and the Sigma 2x which will work on your lense but they are not as sharp. I hope this helps.
I'd hang onto the Canon 2x you bought and get another good piece of glass. A lesser TC won't get the best out of what you buy.The Canon 2x works awesomely with the 300/2.8 IS, for instance. See this link for full frames and 100% crops on a couple of showoff shots....
Mike thanks for the suggestions. I havent had the time to register in the forum and see the photos. I will. Oh the canon 2x didnt fit my 70-300 IS lens..so I had to return it. I read this other forum where people were talking about a good lens for landscape photography. I realized I didnt have anything wider than a 28mm. I decided to use that money into buying the 18-55mm ( as recommended by so many for a beginner's use) and also purchased the 580 canon flash. Figured I will have two new toys to play with. Thanks for all your input.

I guess the outcome of this discussion will help me decide if I want to even invest in a teleconverter, or go for another nice piece of glass. :)
