This is partially self serving, but perhaps others in the Portland area would like this too.
I'm curious about what you would pick as your top 1 or 2 places for sunrise photograph within 1 1/2 to 2 hours drive from Portland. It doesn't necessarily need to be something that you can just drive up to, there might be a hike involved, but if you respond, please list if there is a hike invovled or overnight camping recommended, or if you can drive up to the location.
I just thought it would be kind of neat to have a list to start like this.
Long Beach area (Dismal Niche and Knappton areas on Columbia River-WA side of Astoria Megler bridge) Nacotta on the bay, above Ilwaco looking down onto the boat basin and over he cranberry bogs, especially in the fog). no hiking.
I was in HR today for the sunrise, and there are many spots for sunrise shots for both Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams. Parkdale, too.

I like Whiteriver Canyon on the SE side of Mt Hood. The mountain catches some alpenglow in the mornings here and Whiteriver itself provides a nice foreground element. It's more photogenic during the winter when covered with snow. Some hiking/snowshoeing is required. 1-2 miles usually gets you into a pretty good spot.
Having just been to Lavender Valley, at Hood River, that is certainly a nice sunrise location.
I like Ecola St. Park the hour after sunrise.
For a non-nature location, the east bank esplanade across from downtown Portland can be a nice urban landscape at sunrise with the light on the buildings and potentially above it if they exist.
Trillium Lake is also a fav, and I may just go up there tomorrow (Sunday 7/18) If the radar shows some cloud potential. I think that place benefits from an interesting sky.
I'm on the lookout for more sunrise locations, because those are the easiest for me to get away to and get back home and still have a lot of time with my family.

Anyone else have some input?
