I have been wondering about this. I have not been able to make good jpgs from some of my images and many of you do a good job of this. For example recently, I posted an image that really needs to have lots of detail, and the posted jpg does not have it. So I completely agree with the "critiquers".
The part that does bother me is that the image has a huge amount of detail and is very sharp. The image has been printed to 12x18 and is in my office here at work and people are amazed that every single feather shows up in detail. The usual comment about the print is WOW look at the detail in the feathers!
I usually just size the image down from my master file using using the image size dialogue and then go to save for web and then I sharpen. Am I doing something wrong? Should I be doing something else?
I am starting to get images ready for a web site so I kind of want to do this the best way I can.
Thanks,

In Photoshop, you need to be using the bicubic sharper to resize to smaller images. This should solve your problem.

I downsize, then sharpen, then save for web. Sharpening after you have already saved it at a lower resolution limits your results. Try sharpening it at the correct size first, then save for web.
Hope that helps!
