Columbine in the Red
This one's a bit different than the usual landscapes I do, so I'd love to hear your thoughts/critiques on it. This was f/4.0, 200mm, about 50% cropped. Below is the uncropped version for comparison.

This was from Ice Lakes Basin, during a two day trip with Aleks. You can see the rest of my photos from the trip here: http://www.widerange.org/gallery/ice-lakes-basin-july-2010/

The wildflowers were pretty awesome up there... so were the crowds! Probably at least 200 other hikers up there. I've never seen so many people in the San Juans.

Beautiful series...great color and light!
I like the cropped version best.

For me I liked all the ones except the one you posted. The dog one was really cool. Guess I'm just not a big fan.

Beautiful series Jack, love the dog shot, the close up of the columbine and the sunrise shot! Your descriptions of the crowds scare me a little since I am headed there in a few days...

I love the dog shot and the WA shots of the basin--beautiful! I dont really care for this blurry red stuff tho, looks like ketchup fell on the lens

I love your thinking. A couple of fairly sharp paintbrush would have helped the context, but I still like it. I'll never camp in Ice Lake Basin on a summer weekend again!! The crowds are unreal.

Ah, yes, thank you Jesse, that's it! The context is missing... (ketchup or wildflowers?)

Wonderful set - I love the Border Collie (I think) shot and the first one here.

Oh man, I loves me some Jack Brauer Phototgraphy! The Romanticist leanings in me say, the two here are just fine! Very artistic. The others are excellent as usual.

I will get into processing my images as soon as I can get out of work and hoping they're half as good as what you came away with! Of course my dog (yes it's a BC) who never wants to pose for me had a great old time looking cuter then ever for Jack in the wildflowers. He also loved racing Jack on the trail leaving me a few switchbacks behind

Great shots all 'round, Jack. I'm thinking I like the uncropped version of the two posted here. I like that hint of paintbrush included on the left. They're both great, that's just my preference if forced to pick.

Years ago I saw a Pat O'Hara shot using this technique, but with a red blur of color framing a similarly colored leaf or branch or something. The way you did it with the columbine framed in red is even more awesome.

The dog shot beats a similar shot I took a few years ago of my truck amongst a field of flowers BY FAR. Somehow a border collie looks better than a Nissan in this situation. Who knew?!

Really like the cropped version. I think the red adds a little pop to the image.

Excellent series!
This has been a banner year for wildflowers, eh?
I prefer the uncropped version solely because the included paintbrush in focus does add needed context.
My first thought on seeing the cropped version was that of a frame of film partially exposed to sunlight (remember those days?).

It's interesting but kind of distracting.
