Bottle-nosed dolphin - what do you see?
Hi All

Back from a family holiday with a small selection of dolphin images. A friend and I managed a few sessions during which I got my most successful dolphin pictures to date. Not quite there yet but coming on? C & C welcome.

Cheers,
Chris

PS. Prompted by a blog I recently read, I asked myself what I see in this image: Just a mammal; A source of emotional enrichment; A heavy metal storage unit? More than just a dolphin.

Nice one.... I might just lose a tad from the left hand side... guess that there was not a lot you could do about the horizons positioning.... Not got time at the mo to read the link but will do...

The timing here is super with the dolphin completely out of the water... the lateral view is great... just enough water 'splash' to imply the action, perhaps a touch more black? (I am viewing on a monitor that is not best calibrated mind)

I see battle scars and rake marks which are telling of just how boisterous these can be.. I'm not one for anthropomorphising over animals but can understand how enchanting they can be.. Nice capture and I agree with Phil about a little more in the blacks are needed.

TFS.

Chris, I have tried this shot once or twice myself, and therefore know how hard it is to get the timing right. I think you have done a great job here. As for your question, I think I would have put the 'just' before the 'a source of (human?) emotional enrichment'. Dolphins are so much more than that.

A very well caught image Chris. Timing is spot on. Viewing here on a really poor works monitor so I can't comment on any techs. Bearing in mind the white background to the forum images perhaps put a very fine black key-line around the image to isolate it from the white. As regards 'What do I see?'.... at the risk of incurring everyones wrath I will be honest and say I just see a Dolphin as I have never been able to understand what the great appeal of these creatures is. I'd get a much bigger buzz seeing any member of the mustelid family over one these any day!

A lovely image Chris. Nice to see the whole Dolphin out of the water. Agree there is just the right amount of splash. Can't have been easy to get a shot like this.

I see a beautiful and intelligent creature.

Thanks for the feedback.

It was really tough to get something approaching half decent but there are much better examples than mine kicking around. Such was the challenge, trying to get a decent shot became addictive (cetacean fan of not).

Being on a beach with hoards of dolphin 'lovers' really made me appreciate now nature can get to people – it was great to experience some positive energy . . . even better that it was generated by wildlife! It would be great to find a way of bottling it and passing it around to the masses. In the meantime there's photo-communication.

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Chris, thanks for posting this image, takes me back a few years to our family holiday up in Mull when I was fortunate enough to have two of these bow riding my inflatable Kayak!! I had the camera in the boat and while trying to paddle and get a shot the dolphins appeared to be having a bit of a game with me (hide and seek I think  ) Never got a shot but one of the best experiences of my life! Its also amazing how big they are close up!!

I would have been happy with something half as good as this :toast:
