I recommend the EyeOne-Display 2 colorimeter and software.
Here's one source that I highly recommend: Chromix. Good folks, there. Also, they have some excellent tutorials on color management--check them out.
After obtaining your tool and installing the software take these preliminary steps before calibrating and proifiling:
--Ensure the screens are clean
--Download and install the latest video card driver from the manufacturer.
--Allow the monitors to warm up and stabilize.
--Turn off screen savers, just to be safe.
--If Adobe Gamma is in your Startup folder, delete the shortcut.
--Set any color management options in your video driver to 'default'
--Perform your calibration in the ambient light you normally use when working on your images.
Funny you should mention Chromix. Just a couple of weeks ago we sent out our most recent newsletter, and in it is an article all about the different monitor calibration devices & the benefits of each: http://www.colorwiki.com/wiki/Profiling_Devices_for_Monitors
We have just had a lot of requests from people to tell them what's the best calibrator to use and we tried to distill the advice into one article.
I bought my Monaco Optix-XR from Chromix. The staff there were very friendly, and helpful. A couple of months ago I had to reinstall the X-Rite software (HD Crash) and needed some help. Again, the folks at Chromix helped me out. I also appreciate your contributions to NPN and at The Large Format forum.
Given my experiences with Chromix, I never hesitate to recommend the company!
