I've been to Paradise Divide (outside Crested Butte) a few times, but I've never seen something like this there... I was leading a workshop and normally don't shoot when I'm teaching, but when this rainbow appeared I just had to run to the car and get my gear. I'm very glad the workshop students were fortunate enough to experience (and capture!) something as rare as this.
There were probably a dozen tents scattered around the area, too... but none of those people got up early enough to witness this event!
The rainbow eventually became a strong double, and lasted for a good five minutes. This is just one frame of many, with quick processing in Lightroom. I'll probably end up doing a straightforward HDR treatment on this to bring out more detail in the trees, but I hope this single shot communicates well enough.
I can't think of enough good things to say about this, so I'll just say "WOW". The gods were smiling on you on this morning, Nat. Just personal preference, but I don't think I'd go with HDR. I really like the almost silhouette look of the trees.
I was up there with Nat, it was really beautiful. You should have heard the shutters when it popped out. Here's my rendition, straight Lightroom processing (thanks to Nat!)
Absolutely and classically gorgeous. A once in a lifetime capture, for sure!
Interesting to see the two different versions here. Ironically, I gotta say that I much prefer the 'development' of the second (student) version.

Wow wow WOW! Contrary to what you said you'd do to this, I don't think you need anymore detail in the trees.
I've been in CB the last few days, but now I might as well pack up and go home. I sure can't top this.
