Hello, I just transferred to attend college in walla walla and I was wondering since I'm new to the area if anybody could give me some tips on good locations for photography. I would greatly appreciate any tips offered and also any good camera stores nearby?
Thank you and keep on shooting.

A favorite location of mine and many others is the Palouse, in particular the areas surrounding Steptoe Butte out of Colfax. Anytime May thru mid-August or so and winter if there is snow on the ground.

My daughter is thinking of attending Whitman....which college are you going to?

Chad, the area around Walla Walla can be quite interesting...depending on what your photographic interests are. It's farm and winery country, so I would recommend getting a good Washington Atlas and setting some time aside to drive the area. You aren't too far from Palouse Falls (an hour and a half, give or take). Head east on Hwy 12 until you get to the turnoff for Starbuck and then north until you see the signs for the Palouse Falls turnoff.

Drive the backroads around Waitsburg and Prescott both a little north and east of Walla Walla. Many barns, silos and hills and fields. The Palouse around are gets all the cred, but there are nice scenes in this area too.

You are a little more than two hours from Steptoe Butte. It's worth the drive for sunrise/sunset golden hours. With a good map, you can travel the back roads and find many unique comps.

There is an old covered bridge north of Colfax on Manning Rd (off of Green Hollow) best photographed late in the day. Again, about a two hour drive from Walla Walla.

Those are my recommendations. I think you'd have the most fun just exploring the backroads around Walla Walla, Waitsburg, Prescott, and the Tri Cities. The back roads around Dayton and Pomeroy can also yield good rolling hills and barn shots (it's about an hour and a half to Pomeroy).

Hi Chad. Despite the fact that both of my daughters attended WWU last year, I haven't explored the area photographically. Every time I've been over there, it's been to visit them and I've not had/taken the time. With that said, I think there is tons of potential. The fields north of town look very Palouse like to me, and the Blue Mts. are nearby.

Both girls will be away next year, my eldest doing an SM year in Costa Rica and my younger attending Newbold. (Bummer, looks like I'll be traveling next year  .) They both plan to return to WWU the following year, and maybe I'll finally be able to get out and explore the area a bit more. If you do find some hot spots, post photos. I'll be watching with interest.
