A break from my normal off the wall stuff - this is an on the wall thing - a rather fine orb spider that built a large web on the kitchen window. I caught this shot at 10.30pm with the spider silhouetted against the street light opposite the house.

1DMk3, 100mm Canon macro, 1/40th @ f2.8, ISO 2500, handheld, one foot in the sink and the other sliding across the kitchen floor on a small stool.

Cool shot

Just a thought, can you change the colour balance on RAW conversion to blue spectrum to make it look more like the moon?

I'm surprised at the angular bokah/aperture blade cut-offs if the shot is more or less wide open

Mike - might be more to do with a combination of the triangular shape of the light fitting outside, and the shot through double galzing.

Nicely thought out as said already. Good thinking.

Thanks John - FWIW the 100mm USM is 8 bladed, the new 100mm IS USM is 9 'round' bladed.

I was just surprised at the noticeable bokah effect given how well respected the lens is for macro sharpness. Bokah is bokah, there's 'nout you can do about it!

Very well done John - a tricky shot to pull off handheld with a foot in the sink! Nice to see the high ISO. The really appealing thing for me is the subtle detail of the spider's web. Like it lots - simple but effective.

Cheers,
Chris

Great stuff. My daughter and granddaughter tell me off about spiders' webs on my windows, but if an opportunity arises like this it will be well worth the hassle.

This works for me as it is. The way the web works out from the light really balances the image for me :toast:
