I was thinking of heading American Basin via Silverton. Are there any problems with taking Cinnamon Pass from Animas Forks? I have a 4wd. Any camping restrictions in American Basin? I assume that one must back pack from the trailhead to camp overnight? Finally, is American Basin good for both sunrise and sunset photograhy?

Thanks
Sal

You can set up a tent or sleep in your vehicle at the TH parking lot. Please don't set up in the middle of a wildflower meadow as I've seen others do. Sunrise is better for light on the mountains, but you can shoot more intimate landscapes and close-ups in the afternoon and evening - you can also hike up Handies Peak for amazing big landscape views of the San Juans.

I visited American Basin the middle of last week. Many of the flowers were wilted, so if you are searching for wildflower shots, you might look for another spot since by now the wilt will be even more pronounced.
