So, I meant to post this in ESS a few days ago and never got around to it. Then I thought, I always wish there were more image postings in the Alaska forum.
The atmosphere in Tracy Arm on this day was nice, but the light never really got exciting. The sides of the mountains in the photo are not nearly as dramatic or vertical as many of the others we passed. These icebergs were not the biggest, or the bluest, or the most intricate that I photographed. And yet, to me there is an undeniable beauty through the entire scene. That's why I call it 'common in paradise'.
This is Tracy arm photographed from the ship Adventure Bound, which is owned by the tour company of the same name. If you've never been...think about it. It's good.

Hey Kent, great job in what some might consider "less than ideal light". I love it, it's moody and "drips" of coastal Alaska. This could easily be Prince William Sound or the Kenai Fjords. Scenes like this make me wish I could climb those huge slabs of rock and look over to the next ridge of valley, then keep walking. Thanks for sharing this on the Alaska Forum!
Kent, that's lovely. I know what you mean about the "undeniable beauty". I see that all the time, and it can be very, very hard to bring that feeling into the image. You are really good at doing it, however. This has such a sweet, calm feeling to it. Quiet, I think is what it is.
One of the things I'm interested in is how the icebergs in southcentral seem to have a much more opaque appearance, whereas yours seem to have a nice translucent appearance.....it's something I'm going to check into.

This is an exceptional photo in my opinion, Kent! It correctly and accurately portrays the Alaskan coast in one of its most common weather conditions. Having grown up on the coast (Prince William Sound), I have grown to love and appreciate the quiet and haunting scenes of fog shrouded mountains and trees especially when they are adorned with those beautiful blue and white jewels of floating ice. This photo captures the atmosphere and reality of it better than most. The exposure is perfect, the colors are as real and natural as it gets and the crisp details in the ice and on the mountains is exquisite!
I also agree with you in wishing there were more photos being shared in this forum.
