Looking to get a new monitor for editing but not really sure what I need/want. Don't want to spend a ton of money, I think I remember reading something about a NEC that was pretty reasonable but can't seem to find the thread.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Check out this fairly recent thread concerning the NEC P221W 22" monitor. $400 seems like a great deal to me.
If Erik Stensland purchased one, I would consider that a pretty good endorsement. Hopefully he'll have something more to say about it here.

Also consider the HP LP2475W IPS display.. I have been very happy with mine.

I have a 26" NEC which I really like, but it was $1200.00 so I don't know it that disqualifies it from your definition of a "ton of money".

I just purchased two NEC P221W a couple of weeks ago after talking to Erik. I would highly recommend.

A good budget monitor is the NEC EA231WMI-BK. It is a 23" with an IPS panel. $270 on sale and am very happy with it.

If I had more money to spend I would have bought the Dell U2410 24" monitor for $499.

For other options, check out this thread:

and scroll down to the "PRINT-TARGET MEDIA PROCESSING" and "PHOTO EDITING" sections.

Don, if he paid in pennies it might be a ton of money.

Thanks guys appreciate the info, I think I'm going to get the NEC EA231WMI-BK that everyone seems to like.

Jeremy, there's a big difference between the 221W and the 231WMI. If you want to ever use the Spectraview software, you'll have to spend more and go with the 221W. I'm all for saving money, but your monitor is not the place to do it. Check out NEC's website for refurbs. They often have good deals, but you need to check it daily as stock fluctuates.

Regarding refurbs, keep in mind that refurbs may be much more likely to have bad pixels (or other flaws) in the display than with a new monitor. (That's often how they end up being a refurb.) It's not uncommon to have up to 6 bad pixels on a display that still meets quality tolerances for a refurb. Personally, I wouldn't want any bad pixels when I'm dealing with photos.
