I'm looking into getting the 17-40 f4L lens for my 5D and want to be POSITIVE on this point. In reading about it, it says it is designed for use with smaller sensor cameras like the 20D, 30D etc. Now don't y'all with full frame sensors use this lens? I don't want the same thing happening as what happened with the Tokina 12-24 and the 5D. Will I get 17mm when it's dialed in on the 5D?
Thanks!

The 17-40L Canon lens is a full-frame lens and works on the 5D, 5D Mk II, etc. (And all EOS film bodies for that matter!) You may find it a little soft in the corners on a full-frame body; this should go away when stopped down. 17mm is waaaaay wide on a full-frame camera body - especially compared to a 24mm, my former widest lens.

Pam, I used to own this lens. Out of curiosity, what other lenses do you use on your 5D? That info will prompt a follow-up from me.

Lens My opinion of it
Tokina f4 12-24 Nice and sharp but can't use below 19mm
Tokina f 5.6 19-35 OK, not great, was my first lens with 10D in 2004
28-135 f5.6 IS OK lens for walking around but not super sharp
50 mm 1.8 plastic fantastic Rediculously sharp for the price, fast
100mm f2.8 macro Love it, very sharp and fast
70-200 f2.8 L IS One of my favs, speaks for itself
300 f4 L IS Newest, love it
1.4 and 2X extenders
I'm looking at the 17-40 to fill the gap I have for a super wide zoom, and lots of you uber photogs seem to use it. I have the 75-300 f5.6 IS zoom that I'd just as soon get rid of...rarely use it. It was my first attempt at gaining some reach while still being able to feed my family. Why do you no longer have the 17-40?

Hear, hear!!
I couldn't agree more. Wait 'til you try it for images of star filled skies!
I own the 17-40 lens (on a full frame camera) and love it. I've found the sweet spot to be f8-f16 for max. sharpness throughout.
I no longer own the 17-40mm lens but for three years I used it on a 1Ds MKII and my 5D2, both of which are full frame sensors. You will love shooting that wide!

It's the best available Canon option for super wide zoom on FF. Should fit in nicely with your 50mm, 70-200mm, etc.

Great lens. I've used it on a 40D, 50D, and 5D, and lets not forget my EOS 1V.
