Dark and Stormy Night in the Pecos

Instead of looking for meteors last Thursday night, I was hunkered down in my tent in the pouring rain, after fleeing off the summit of East Pecos Baldy in new Mexico's Pecos Wilderness. I did get a couple shots before I ran for it, though, and it was worth the effort. If anything, I might have processed this lighter than the reality. I've never seen such inky clouds with such lurid light in the gaps.

This one, which is looking north towards the Truchas Peaks, can be seen a tad larger here. I've got a view in the other direction, which I like almost as much, on my blog.

I think the second one on your blog is possibly more impressive than this one - you've got that funky wave cloud action (I'm sure that's not the technical term!) going on. I would like to see both darker, as you describe in your post.

Both excellent images Jackson.
The rocky ridge makes a great foreground in both.

Those are both deliciously scary and beautiful, Jackson.

Scary looking, definitely! I think I actually prefer the second one as well. It draws me into it more so than the first.

Yikes! I dig both images but frankly, I'm glad you were there and I wasn't. Lightning is the one thing that paralyzes me with fear. Well, that and hairless cats. At any rate, I'm glad the Gods of Electricity were on your side and that you were able to make a couple dark, dramatic images before running for it.

Love the composition of the first one! Processing looks completely natural and not too bright at all.

Scary indeed! Cool shot.

Thanks folks! Bret, the only reason I went up there was that this thing was moving really slowly and didn't seem to have much electricity in it. Always a risk, of course, but even a hint of nearby thunder would definitely have turned me around!

Ah, great shots.

Wow, those clouds look OMINOUS! Very dramatic photos... I like them both. Possibly the second a tad more because of the wavy cloud.

I like both. The clouds in the second one are awesome!

Wow, almost apocalyptic. Gives new meaning to "fire in the sky".

Very cool shots. I have been in the Pecos several times but never high enough to see scenes like this. I'll definitely have to go back...

Great light and clouds, I like it!
