I'm heading towards Glacier Nat. park at the end of the month, and I was wondering if anyone could offer some suggestions as to sunrise/sunset locations, day hikes, great camping?

Thanks for your time, and I appreciate any information.

Kevin, I've never been so I don't have to much intelligent to say. But the SummitPost page on Glacier is really well done, tons of info there. That's where I'd probably start for day hikes and great camping.

My favorite place of all of the places I have ever been in the lower 48. And you will be there at a pretty good time. Lake MacDonald, St. Mary Lake, well, all of the lakes really. I don't think there is a bad place to take photos in the entire park. "Going to the Sun" road is a trip! I hope you have as great a visit as I had a few years back. Make sure you do Avalanche Creek on the west side. Incredible water color and gorges. Can't wait to see some posts, and make sure you put some up on this forum, ok?

Iceberg Lake, Grinnell Lake/Glacier, Avalanche Creek, and Logan Pass would be my most recommended spots to visit from the one trip I had out there. Had some very up-close and personal encounters with goats and sheep along the Hidden Lake trail at Logan Pass. Wanted to do the Garden Wall trail but it was still closed due to snow, and we couldn't get all the way to Grinnell for the same reason (our trip was at the beginning of August, fyi). All of these spots will have a significant number of people, but you have to go backcountry to get away from them. Depending on weather and flowers there's the possibility for a pretty stunning sunrise shot over Saint Mary Lake a mile or so in from the gate before you get to Rising Sun. Hiking from Sun Point to Virginia Falls is a pretty good value for time as well (be sure to go at least a few hundred feet up Sunrift Gorge if you don't go further - the main gorge is sort of parallel to the road).

Can't say much for camping except that Lower Quartz isn't worth it compared to Middle Quartz, and that area (Bowman Lake) is way up there 'out of the way'. We didn't explore it much, but what we did see wasn't a better time value for the trip imho. If I had to pick a single place to base out of for a few days, it would be Many Glacier.

Enjoy your trip, and keep an eye out for the bears - they're surprisingly sneaky when they haven't been spotted!

All the mentioned places are great. Iceberg Lake is worth the hike just for the pleasure and views in my opinion. Many Glaciers is a great area to camp as is Avalanche Creek.

Check my website Glacier gallery and just ask if you want to know the location of any of the images.
