Hi ya'll!

I know that stock photos were a recent subject, but I have other questions, and thought someone here might help.

Today I sold a stock photo to a large nat'l cable company for an 'Industry Standard Fee'. Its actually a small adv. mailer campaign for local community populations - this one is only 13,000 issues. They will also give me © notice.

Anyway, now the rep at the large corporation has mentioned to me to do some assignment work for them. They want shots of other local landmarks in other communities, and the photos will be used again for their adv. mailers. These other communities are all within 1-2 hours of my home. It will be one community at a time.

I need some advice for daily rates, and half day rates.

After I take the images, I will put them online for their viewing. These other communities are much larger, so the number of issues (mailers) should increase.

Option One- I charge them first my daily rate - whatever it takes to get awesome shots - 1,2,3 days. Then if they choose a photo, they need to give me an idea of the issues. Then they again pay 'industry standard useage fees' on the one photo chosen?

Option Two - I get all of the info ahead of time - issues in each community - one photo, and add that to my daily rate? They pay one time and get whatever photo they want.

Any help appreciated.

I have done spec work before for other magazines, including Nat'l Geographic Adventure Mag., but they already had their standard rates.

Thank you in advance!

BY THE WAY - I got my 5D last Wednesday and I LOVE IT! Its done one medium size wedding and High School Senior Portraits, and it has been excellent!

I would go with Option Two: This way the cable company gets what they want and you don't have to spend extra time shooting something that they may not use. The more information that you can get ahead of time will help speed the process and narrow down your time frame. As far as a day rate, you can Google some day rates that other photographers are charging around the country and figure out what would work best for your particular market. Just my 2 cents. Hope this helps. Robbie George

I think Option 2 is good too. I generally charge by the hour with a minimum set of hours or bid the entire project and the time I think I need to fully complete the task and tell them the Hours and the hourly rate.

Yeah, definitely have a discussion with their art director to find out what they might have in mind for each location. I'd still shoot a variety of subjects to present at the end of the day. I use FotoQuote Pro as a pricing guide, which is based on ASMP rates. I may adjust my pricing up or down, depending on what the local market might bear. ON top of that, my standard day rate (8 hours) is $500, plus expenses.

Thanks!

I was kinda aiming toward the second option too. I like to try and keep things simple - they pay and choose their photo.

I've heard of FotoQuote Pro here before, and will check it out. It sounds like it is very helpful.

I'm pretty happy with this deal, and I hope that these other 'community projects' go through!

I'll throw in a recommendation for Agave SPS software, too. Pricing is but one of the many capabilities of this robust software package. I purchased it earlier this year and have been very impressed with it's capabilities. Just wanted to provide an alternative to FotoQuote Pro.
