Telluride recommendations?

I just got to Telluride, where I'm spending a week with my family. I am hoping someone could recommend some sunrise/sunset spots that are very close to the town itself. I'll have to stay quite close to town (less than 30 minutes drive) due to various family obligations I have during the week.

Thanks!

One idea would be to take Hwy. 145 south a few miles to one of the turnouts for Wilson Peak. Continue south a few miles to Trout Lake for another beautiful location where Yellow and Sheep Mountain arise.

Near one of the prominent turnouts that John references, and before you get to the turn-off for Ophir, turn left on the road to Alta Lakes, which is a fantastic sunset location. I know the first trip I ever took to the San Juans back when dinosaurs stilled roamed the Earth, I drove my Chevy Chevette up the road. The sign said "high clearance recommended." I reasoned that since it didn't say required, I'd give it a go. It's a bit too rough for a Chevette these days, but probably not by much.

Dallas Divide is within 30 minutes, Bridal Veil Falls is right on the edge of town, Last Dollar Road will give you good views of the San Miguels both at sunrise and sunset, there's always Lone Cone west of town.

I was going to mention the lower part of Last Dollar Road, but Todd beat me to it! The huge open area right where the Forest Service boundary starts, incredible views back over Wilson Mesa and the high peaks. Panoramic view for sure!

How about up on Wilson Mesa itself, should be some good sunrise light on Wilson Peak I'd imagine, maybe sunset too. Only been in the Fall, so not positive:

Fence at sunset
(this is near the merge of Hughes Road and Wilson Mesa Ranch Circle, on the west side of the mesa)
Wilson Mesa, near the Schmid Ranch

Good luck!

In addition to the ideas already mentioned, Woods Lake would be another option for either sunrise or set.
