Your ID help needed
I was driving through the meadows in Cape May County, NJ when I noticed this bird flying in circles, landing and repeating this behavior. As I approached, I noticed another bird on the ground partially obscured in the grass. It appeared that they were courting or had a nest close by. Not having seen this bird before, I guess it to be a Wilson's or Broad-banded Storm petrel, but the white tips on the tail feathers and the short black legs do not seem to fit the profiles of either. I am interested to know what it is and whether it is unusual for this bird to be spotted inland. Sorry for the quality of the pics they were taken through the windshield of my truck. Thanks for your help.

It looks like an immature gull of some type to me, not a storm petrel. I'll leave it to someone with more knowledge of east coast gulls to determine the exact id.

Definitely a gull.

At Cape May you should see Laughing Gull, Ring-billed Gull, Herring Gull, and Great Black-backed Gull.

This looks like a "first winter" plumage Laughing Gull.

I agree with Richard, Laughing Gull

I returned to this site three times in four days and I saw (what I think was) the same two gulls in the same location, behaving similarly. What do you think might account for this? Thanks, Joe Jupin
