Considering upgrading from the D5000 to the D300S in the not too distant future. I just read an in-depth review on dpreview and I'm thinking, why not just get a used D300 instead. The review didn't convince me that the D300S was significantly better for landscapes and flower macros. I was somewhat turned off with the lack of histogram in liveview which may also be the case with the D300, I haven't checked yet. What do you think?

We don't use liveview, so no clue on that point. But as to the differences between the D300 and D300s, we're not feeling the need.

We absolutely love the D300 for it's low light image quality along with the speed of engagement of both AF and IS, compared to our D2X's. While we bought our first D300 as a backup to for my wife's D2X, now we both have a couple and very often use them rather than our D2X's. I can carry two D300's as easily as I carry a single D2X, meanwhile getting as good or better photos, especially in low light or when shooting really quickly.

I have the D300s and am very happy with it - the noise handling is much better than the 300 (for a few examples check my gallery and look at my latest YCNH photo as well as my most recent Muskrat photo - both of which were at fairly high ISOs).

The frames/sec are faster, it has a dual SD and CF card (which I like a lot) and of course has video capabilities. If you are doing a lot of macro and flowers - I honestly don't see a reason to jump to the D300s over the D300.
