Hadn't seen this mentioned, thought I'd share big announcements from Canon this week (hat tip: DP Review and Canon Rumors)—
NEW! 70-300mm f4-5.6L IS USM lens Hmm, this sounds verrrry interesting!
NEW! Canon EOS 60D (replaces 50D)
NEW! Canon EOS 8-15mm f4L fish-eye lens (circular 180-degree angle-of-view image at 8mm on a full-frame camera, frame-filling at 15mm. WOW!)
updated 300mm and 400mm f2.8L IS USM lenses
updated 500mm and 600mm f4L IS USM lenses Dan? Are you okay? How many fingers am I holding up?
updated 1.4X and 2X extenders

Always plenty to be announced prior to the Canon Expo in NYC next week.

I saw this yesterday, Todd. I'm stoked about two things: the 70-300L and the Canon S95 (not mentioned in your post). I'm picking both up as soon as they're available. The 70-300 will replace my 100-400, which I just sent back to Canon for repair and will be selling shortly. I've been wanting an advanced p&s to always have with me and the S95 fits the bill. 720P HD video, in camera HDR, RAW capture, fits in a pocket, etc. Nice!

That 70-300 looks mighty attractive to me, too, Bret, but I'd hate to give up that extra 100mm on the long end while gaining an extra 30mm on the short end, especially since I've only recently broken the secret code of how to get sharp landscape images with my 100-400. (tripod, live view, f16-ish, 2-sec. self-timer, electronic cable release) It's always been a decent handheld IS wildlife lens, but now I love it for landscapes, too.

What…? No 24-70mm IS yet?

Quite a haul for the sports and wildlife crowd.

If I did not already have the surprisingly good Samyang fisheye and I also had full frame that zoom fisheye would be interesting, but somehow I doubt it costs what my Samyang did.....

I was hoping for an updated 17-40 with IS and better corners.

I reckon Canon didn't think they had enough 70-300 lenses (3rd or 4th now)? And $1500 ?!?
I too have a mild case of 'gadgetitis', but this is an easy one to pass, especially before image examples taken in the field start coming out.

What I (and many, many others) would like to see is a wide angle lens upgrade on par with Nikon's superb 14-24 f2.8 lens.
Now that's $1500 well spent!

As for the in-camera HDR feature of the s95...well, at 1.9 fps (at best) you better have a tripod or a super steady hand to capture those 3 static images needed for a successful end result. Not having an optical viewfinder (a deal killer for me) will make it even more difficult capturing 3 static images for in-camera processing without using a tripod. JPEG only, natch.
Waiting for real world examples would be prudent here, as well.
And no AF or optical zoom possible shooting video?

Pardon me, but I'm underwhelmed (again) by most of Canon's offerings this year.

Go read about the Sony a55....that camera is going to change the face of photography for a VERY long time ...Phase detection HD video, EVF, and a translucent mirror. It certainly is VERY different than anything else out there at a price point that made my mouth drop...$750 body only. http://www.imaging-resource.com/NEWS/1282622515.html This is really going to push competition!

I'm still trying to save for an old 17-40L!

They always know how to make me feel old and outdated :frown:

hope the new 1.4 ext. will work on my 100-400mm L series lens. Wow what if the 2.0 worked well also?

Rohn, Canon has stated both new extenders will "work" on the older lenses, but they have been optimized for the new super-teles.

I'll be interested in hearing if there is any noticeable image improvement that would justify an upgrade for those with older glass and the current version II extenders. I doubt that I could find much improvement in the current 1.4x + 500mm combo, but I'd certainly welcome a better 2x, even at $500.
