Some of the posts to my Aerial thread the other day mentioned Carl Hiaasen.

For those who like Carl's kind of humor, you might try "Fluke" by Christopher Moore.

One of the characters in "Fluke" is based on Flip Nicklin, a terrific photographer who I met during a trip to Alaska.

Flip turned me on to "Fluke." Thanks, Flip.

Thanks for the heads up Lance. It sounds like my kind of read. Alaska is in dire need of a good Hiaasen. Lots of good one-liners floating around with no one to gel them into a story. Here's an example of popular Alaskan humor: Know the difference between Sarah Palin and Ross Perot? Boob job.

Speaking of Carl Hiaasen, here's one of my favorite passages of his from Team Rodent. This is a wonderful monograph that found one day in a used book shop. I think it is very relevant to nature photography:

Disney is so good at being good that it manifests an evil; so uniformly efficient and courteous, so dependably clean and conscientious, so unfailingly entertaining that it's unreal, and therefore is an agent of pure wickedness. Imagine promoting a universe in which raw Nature doesn't fit because it doesn't measure up; isn't safe enough, accessible enough, predictable enough, even beautiful enough for company standards. Disney isn't in the business of exploiting Nature so much as striving to improve upon it, constantly fine-tuning God's work.

I often think of this quote when I see images that have been photoshopped to "improve" what was there originally.
