Grosbeak on the Feeder
So what do you do when you have a lousy background but maybe a good image. In this case, can PS rescue an image successfully or am I fooling myself? This Grosbeak shot appeared to have potential but a white blownout background. Enter CS5 and the article on refine edge in the latest photoshop user magazine. So the image is shot at iso400, f6.3, 250th sec, 500 plus 1.4X, d700 with a blown out white background and a similarly exposed OOF foliage shot is blended as a layer with a layer mask of the bird. Does it work or is it too obvious or if I keep working on my skills can I fool the educated eye?

In this case, it seems too obvious, but I would keep working with it. The lower left side of the grosbeak's back gives it away and is obvious enough to be distracting (rather than just barely detectable). Give it another go....the subject color and bg color nicely complement each other.

Thanks for the reply
Yeah, I can see clearly where it looks fake but the beak and the area just below look convincing to me whereas the rest is questionable. Best to get the perfect shot but it never hurts to hone ones PS skills. I know there are some folks out there who could probably pull off what I was trying to attempt and do it rather convincingly.

Keep practicing the skills, David. Making the selection is a pretty big deal. And sometimes you have to discern where the edges need to be a little less than razor sharp. Darn good try! It's a nice shot of the bird.
